At St George’s Anglican Church in Epsom, a carefully planned upgrade has extended the life of a much-loved heritage building. Constructed in 1916, the church required urgent attention to address deteriorating asbestos roofing while protecting its architectural character.
BSM Group Architects designed a solution that safely removed the original roof tiles and replaced them with recycled rubber tiles, providing durability, low maintenance, and a 50-year warranty. The works also formed the first stage of a wider seismic strengthening programme, lifting the building towards 67% NBS.
Working closely with heritage architects and council planners, the project balanced safety, sustainability, and respect for the church’s cultural and historic significance.
