BSM led the design team for the extension and alteration of the wharekai at Pūtiki Marae, Whanganui, a building of significant cultural and historic value within the marae complex and in relation to Māori service history.
The design approach centred on the careful retention of the original 1919 structure, preserving its established form, sarked ceiling and primary roof framing, while integrating the upgrades necessary to meet building code compliance and improved functional performance.
A contemporary addition extends the dining area and accommodates new kitchen and support spaces, increasing capacity and operational efficiency for marae use. The intervention is designed to sit respectfully alongside the original building, maintaining the integrity of its external character while expressing a clear distinction between heritage fabric and new work.
